Another session on this action packed Saturday, it’s time for second free practice on the streets of Monaco. In the first session we’ve had Evans top the leader-board ahead of the two Maserati MSG Racing drivers, who are racing this weekend on their home soil. Can they keep the momentum going and score some valuable points in their home race later today?
Second free practice began with 21C air temperature, which made us jealous considering the early hours in Monaco. Green flag and most of the drivers went out on track immediately, with the McLaren’s leading the way.
The first driver to set a lap time was Rast with the time of 1:45.991s, but he was soon dethroned from P1 by Sette Camara with the time of 1:33.460s. Very fast the drivers began to improve their times, with the position of the leader on top of the leader-board began to change second by second. Soon, it was Evans again on top, followed by again two Maserati’s and his teammate Bird.
The Porsche powered cars returned in full swing this session, after loosing time in FP1 due to a software issue. They treated the star of FP2 quite conservatively, with Lotterer and Dennis 12th and 13th as they returned to their pits.
20 minutes left on the clock and the Top 5 at that moment consisted of Evans, with the time of 1:30.784s, followed by Hughes, Günther, Müller and Buemi in P5.
With 15 minutes own, a few drivers went back to pits, while Fenestraz topped the leader-board with the time of 1:29.788s. It appears that the Porsche-powered cars might still be struggling, as all of them placed somewhere below P10 (highest at that time was Wehrlein at P12). Soon enough the customer squad of Andretti was capable of redeeming themselves, with Dennis going 3rd fastest, just behind Buemi and Fenestraz, and Lotterer going 6th fastest.
Ten minutes left on the clock and the Top 10 at that time consisted of: Buemi in P1, Fenestraz, Dennis, Vergne, Evans, Lotterer, Gunther, Frijns, Hughes and Vandoorne in P10. Cassidy seems to be still plagued by some issues, dropping down to P22. Apparently, the Envision with the number 37 had some issues in regards to its power-train. He’s reported “massive vibrations” that can be related to regen, something that won’t be an easy fix with such a pack day like Saturday in Monaco. Trouble for the title contender?
Checkered flag and it is Gunther in P1, followed by Evans, Dennis, Sette Camara, Vandoorne, Bird, Buemi, Fenestraz, Vergne and Ticktum in P10. Here’s the final classification after the session:
