Zane Maloney has joined the Sauber Academy and will become the reserve driver for Stake F1 Team.
The 20-year-old is set for a busy 2024 campaign, balancing his commitments as Stake’s reserve driver with a Formula 2 campaign.
The Barbadian will drive for Rodin Motorsport during his second season at that level after taking four podiums last season.
Maloney is delighted to be part of Stake F1 Team: “I am honoured to join the Sauber Academy and to take on the role of one of Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber’s Reserve Drivers.
“The Sauber name resonates with Formula One, as it has been part of the sport for over thirty years, paving the way for so many drivers who went on to achieve great success.
“I am pleased to become part of this family, and I am looking forward to working together this season as I move closer to my goal of becoming a Formula One driver.”
The FIA F2 driver suffered the disappointment of being dropped by the Red Bull academy in 2023 and will share the F1 reserve role with Formula 2 champion Théo Pourchaire.
Maloney has shown blistering speed on his road to the fringes of the Formula 1 grid.
The British F4 title in 2019 was teamed with finishing second in FIA F3 three years later for Trident.
Sauber Academy Director Beat Zehnder added: “We are delighted to welcome Zane as the latest addition to the Sauber Academy.
“His path through the junior series has been remarkable so far, and with his speed and potential, he indeed makes a great addition to our talented roster.
“In addition to his Formula 2 campaign, where he will aim to succeed our own Théo Pourchaire to the title, Zane will also share with him the Reserve Driver role for Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber.
“On behalf of the whole team, I give him my warmest welcome onboard and look forward to working together and achieving great success.”
Maloney’s FIA Formula 2 season kicks off on the 1st and 2nd of March in Bahrain and sees the debut of Qatar in F2.
