Round two of the double header in Portland commenced with the final 30 minutes of practice for the drivers. They had the final chance to change their set-ups ahead of the qualifying session.
After yesterday’s hiccup, Nick Cassidy seemed to have turned a new leaf, setting the third-fastest time, within the first 10 minutes of the session. He set good sector times, but made a mistake by running deep into turn 1. The Jaguar driver still managed to clock the fastest sector.
Nyck De Vries also topped the timesheets as the first driver to break into the 1:09s. Mahindra, are the most improved this season, coming from their best performance yesterday, with Mortara finishing in fourth. This almost doubled their points, removing themselves from the bottom of the Teams’ standings.
António Félix da Costa was the next to fly, going the fastest in all three sectors, setting a time of 1:08.817. NEOM McLaren driver Jake Hughes also looked in form after Race 1 race ended early for him, clocking a time of 1:08.766s. This was a tenth from the yesterday’s best time.
The full power laps were coming in and Sacha Fenestraz looked as if he was having a better time today. Fenestraz crashed out of yesterday’s practice session, but has now regained his confidence, with Collet behind him.
Meanwhile, Mitch Evans went faster than his record time, going quicker by a couple of thousandths. The Jaguar driver pushed hard, bringing a chunk of grass on to the exit of Turn 11. It is a tricky part of the track, but it was Turn 1, that got the best of the drivers, with Cassidy running straight.
The final corner continues to cause issues as Mitch Evans slides off on to the grass 😬
