The second day of Formula E pre-season testing at Circuito de Jarama saw Maserati MSG Racing’s Jake Hughes continue his streak from Day 1, setting the pace in the morning session. DS PENSKE’s Maximilian Günther followed up with an impressive performance in the afternoon, achieving the fastest lap of the week and establishing himself as a contender to watch this season.

Hughes leads the pack

Jake Hughes led the way in the morning session with a quick 1:28.604 lap, narrowly outpacing Andretti’s Jake Dennis by 0.081 seconds. Hughes’s consistent top speeds underscore his strong start in the GEN3 Evo cars and suggest he may be a significant player in the season ahead.

Kiro Racing’s Dan Ticktum placed third, followed by reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein in fourth. Hughes’s teammate, Stoffel Vandoorne, secured P5, while NEOM McLaren’s Sam Bird completed the top six despite a minor off-track incident where he briefly found himself in the gravel, manoeuvring around cold tyres.

The morning was less successful for Jaguar TCS Racing, who rejoined testing after a Day 1 penalty for breaching the cost cap. Both Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans struggled, finishing in 18th and 20th, respectively.

Günther takes the fastest lap

The afternoon saw DS PENSKE’s Maximilian Günther make a statement with a record-breaking lap of 1:28.40, securing the fastest time of the testing sessions so far. Dan Ticktum, showing strong form throughout the day, closely trailed Günther with a lap just 0.031 seconds slower.

Jean-Eric Vergne, Guenther’s teammate at DS PENSKE, claimed third, reinforcing the team’s early competitiveness. Kiro’s lineup, with David Beckmann joining Ticktum, continued to impress as Beckmann secured P4, demonstrating promise for their new GEN3 Evo car. Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara rounded out the top six, each showcasing the experience and control that will be crucial in the fiercely competitive Formula E grid this season.

Rookie Zane Maloney made waves with an impressive eighth-place finish for Lola Yamaha ABT, boosting expectations for his debut season. Meanwhile, Jaguar TCS Racing recovered some ground, with Nick Cassidy improving to P7 in the afternoon.
