Ferrari has officially announced their partnership with General Motors for the supply of power units and gearboxes. According to the press statement the deal is for multiple years, starting from 2026 onwards, subject to Andretti Formula Racing LLC receiving written confirmation of their acceptance into the Formula 1 championship. The mentioning of the Andretti name is remarkable, given the struggles namesake Michael Andretti had with the teams.
The admission of Andretti to the grid (now formally under the General Motors umbrella) has faced some setbacks. The FIA happily welcomed the American outfit, but Formula One Management outright denied Andretti into their ranks. The team owners claimed dilution of the value of the championship and questioned the team’s ability to perform from the get-go.
It was later understood that the presence of Michael Andretti himself was what rubbed the teams the wrong way. The son of 1978 World Champion Mario was allegedly too direct for the political circus that is Formula 1.
After stepping down from Andretti Global, the road was clear for the team to make a second attempt. Now under management of TWG Global, the team is granted permission to compete from 2026 onwards. The first three years General Motors will get their power unit and gear box through the Ferrari partnership, before building their own engine for 2029 and beyond.
