Porsche is looking to capitalise on its historic achievements at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Known for its unparalleled atmosphere and technical challenges, the Mexico City race marks a vital milestone in the 2024/25 Formula E season.
Porsche’s storied success in Mexico
For Porsche, the Mexico City E-Prix is synonymous with breakthrough achievements. It was here in 2022 that Pascal Wehrlein and André Lotterer delivered the team’s first-ever Formula E victory with a stunning one-two finish. This followed Lotterer’s landmark pole position in 2020, Porsche’s first in the championship.
Recalling his personal experiences, António Félix da Costa said, “The fans, the atmosphere, and the track running through the stadium all make Mexico one of the best events of the season for me.”
“Over the years, it has become one of the most popular races among the teams, so I’m really looking forward to it. Apart from the past two years, I have always been strong in Mexico and would like to finish on the podium again this time. I feel good, we’re a strong team, and the car means we have a good package for both qualifying and the race.”
In 2023, Wehrlein opened the season with a victory at this iconic track, further solidifying Porsche’s dominance. Although da Costa retired early that year, he remains optimistic about a strong finish this season, building on his second-place result in São Paulo.
Lessons from São Paulo
The season opener in São Paulo proved a rollercoaster for Porsche. Wehrlein’s accident was a significant setback, but da Costa salvaged the weekend with a P2 finish and the fastest lap. Wehrlein expressed gratitude for the recovery efforts, saying, “I’m pleased to be able to drive again in Mexico because the accident in São Paulo was a serious one, and I came away from it with a few injuries.”
“The festive season has helped me to recover, allowing me to go on the attack again. Apart from the accident, things went well in Brazil, and despite not having the best laps in qualifying, I was able to claim pole. That gives us confidence, particularly since we have often been very strong in Mexico in the past. I would like to thank the rescue team in São Paulo – and our own team who are getting my Porsche ready for Mexico.”
Challenges of racing at altitude
At 2,285 metres above sea level, the Mexico City circuit presents unique challenges. The thin air reduces drag, allowing for greater speed and energy efficiency, but it also amplifies tyre degradation. Porsche Director of Factory Motorsport Formula E Florian Modlinger explained, “We’re relieved that Pascal has recovered.”
“However, before we move on from the accident, it is important that everyone involved draws conclusions from it in order to further improve vehicle safety. We have fond memories of Mexico, and São Paulo has made me optimistic that we are well positioned once again. Our pace was very strong in Brazil – across all the Porsches. We’re hoping for a race without any interruptions this time.”
Eyes on the podium
As the team prepares for the Mexico City E-Prix, Porsche’s drivers are eager to make their mark. Da Costa focuses on improving his past performances, while Wehrlein drives to build on Porsche’s legacy at the venue. With both drivers and team leadership emphasising their readiness, all eyes are on Porsche to deliver another landmark performance at a track that has become a hallmark of their Formula E success.
