After a disappointing 2023 F2 season with Invicta Racing, then named Invicta Virtuosi Racing, which saw him finish the thirteen-round season 20th in the drivers’ championship, Amaury Cordeel switched to Hitech Pulse-Eight for the 2024 season. However, though Cordeel’s teammate, Paul Aron, would shine throughout the season, ultimately finishing third in the standings, the Belgian driver would not enjoy similar luck. He ended the season 17th in the drivers’ championship with only 39 points.

Cordeel suffered difficult start to the 2024 F2 season

Cordeel’s season started poorly in Bahrain. After a difficult Thursday in which he qualified P19, he retired from the sprint race on the opening lap due to damage sustained in a collision with Van Amersfoort Racing’s Rafael Villagómez. Although officials later handed Villagómez a 10-second penalty, this offered little consolation to Cordeel, especially as another collision—this time with Prema Racing’s Oliver Bearman—forced him to retire on Lap 14 of the feature race. As a result, stewards issued Cordeel a five-place grid penalty to be served in the sprint race of the 2024 Jeddah F2 round.

Cordeel’s misfortune continued in Saudi Arabia. The Belgian again suffered a difficult qualifying, setting the slowest time of the 21 drivers able to participate in the session. He qualified P21 with the five-place grid penalty not affecting his starting position. After Oliver Bearman, who had secured pole position, withdrew to replace Scuderia Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in the 2024 Saudi Arabian GP, Cordeel moved up to a P20 starting position for both the sprint and feature races.

Unfortunately, Cordeel would not have the opportunity to fight his way too far forward during the sprint race. After spinning on Lap 9, he retired from the race—his third retirement in the season’s first three races.

However, despite the dismal start to the weekend, Cordeel would find better form during the feature race. Despite starting from the back of the grid, he fought his way forward, crossing the finish line P5. This earned him his first 10 points of the season. This was his second-best performance of the season. His best would come during the sprint race in Imola.

Cordeel enjoyed best performance in 2024 Imola F2 round

Despite leaving Melbourne without adding points to his tally, Cordeel remained undeterred in Imola. He qualified P10 in the Friday session, earning himself a start from pole position for the sprint race. Unfortunately, he was unable to hold off his teammate Aron who, after an impressive start, claimed the lead of the race, forcing Cordeel to settle into second.

Cordeel would manage a defensive drive over the first few laps, holding off MP Motorsport’s Franco Colapinto but this would ultimately prove meaningless after a safety car, brought out after a major collision between several drivers.

This would prove to be a key factor in Cordeel falling out of the podium places. After the safety car was brought in, Cordeel suffered a poor restart. He went wide in Turn 18, allowing the chasing Colapinto to force himself past, taking P2 from the Hitech Pulse-Eight driver.

Cordeel would come under further pressure from Rodin Motorsport’s Zane Maloney not too long after. Though Cordeel would hold the Barbadian driver off for several laps, he would ultimately lose position in Lap 23. Unfortunately, Cordeel was not able to recover and cross the finish fourth, adding another five points to his tally. This would be the Belgian’s highest finish of the season, as unfortunately, his poor luck would strike again during the feature race. Cordeel retired on Lap 30 due to a loose wheel.

Cordeel suffered plateau in performance

The Belgian driver went on to score four points in the feature race of the 2025 Barcelona F2 round, and then another six in the feature race in Spielberg. However, this did not indicate a lasting improvement in the driver’s form.

Instead, Cordeel’s performance seemed to plateau after Austria, and though he would score another four points in his home feature race at Spa-Francorchamps, his season would not appear to be taking a true upward turn until the end of the season.

Even then, it was hard to describe Cordeel’s performance as impressive. As in Saudi Arabia, Cordeel suffered a disappointing start to his weekend in Qatar. He qualified P18, setting a time that was almost two seconds off that of his teammate Aron, who set the top time, subsequently claiming pole position for the feature race. Cordeel, unfortunately, could not make his up the field in the sprint race. He finished P16, his final position somewhat helped by the early retirements of four of his rivals.

He did, however, enjoy a better feature race. Despite starting near the back of the grid, as he had in the sprint race, he was able to make his way up the field. He finished P7, though more than 12.5 seconds behind his teammate Aron who claimed his maiden F2 victory.

Cordeel had mixed end to 2024 F2 season

Cordeel would have a somewhat mixed end to his season. Despite a strong qualifying session, which saw him classified tenth after setting the same time as AIX Racing’s Joshua Dürksen, Cordeel suffered a disappointing sprint race. Though he started on pole, he struggled to maintain the lead and ultimately received a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Dürksen. As a result, Cordeel finished the sprint race in P13, leaving him without points.

Fortunately, the feature race was more favourable. He started P9 after his teammate was relegated to a pitlane start for violating technical regulations and went on to finish P8, securing his final four points of the season.

Cordeel faces uncertain future in motorsport

Cordeel’s season was one with few highs and far too many lows, despite him being one of the more experienced drivers on the F2 grid. This, it appears, will not be without consequence.

In December 2024, Hitech Pulse-Eight, which will race under the name Hitech TGR in 2025, confirmed that F3 graduates Luke Browning and Dino Beganovic will fill their seats, replacing Cordeel and Aron.

After three disappointing seasons in F2, Cordeel finds himself without a seat in F2 for 2025, and with little linking him to other series, his future in motorsport remains uncertain.
