Nissan has announced that Gabriele Mini will drive for them in the Jeddah Rookie Session, his second outing with the Japanese outfit.

The Italian has already tasted Formula E machinery having driven for Nissan in the Season 10 Berlin Rookie Test. This is something the Italian will look to utilise as he embarks on the latest rookie test.

Continuing a strong relationship with Nissan

Racing in Berlin proved an eye-opening experience for Mini. Yet, the Italian faired well, scoring top-ten finishes in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

The session will provide Mini with the opportunity to build on the relationships he created. “I’m looking forward to this opportunity after working with the team at the Berlin Rookie Test last year.

“It was my first time in an electric race car then and I learned a lot which I’m confident can help me in Jeddah. The biggest challenge when I discovered Formula E was the complexity of the race simulation and having to be quick but also efficient, with energy management, at the same time.”

Is Mini looking for a Formula E drive?

Designed for 11 drivers with little experience of the new GEN3 Evo car, the rookies are given 40 minutes around the circuit to experience the car and provide feedback to all of the teams.

Yet, for Mini, the idea of a drive in Formula E will prove a tantalising prospect for the young Italian.

While Mini will look to impress Nissan, his feedback will prove crucial. The rookies will be first onto the brand new circuit so their comments will be invaluable, especially as an alternative career path to follow on his debut Formula 2 season.

The inaugural Jeddah E-Prix will take place on the 14th and 15th of February. It will also play host to this season’s first-ever double-heade. On the other hand, the rookie test is scheduled for the 13th of February.
