After a crash-ridden free practice, the first qualifying session of the 2025 season went underway. Full report and results of the F2 qualifying for the Australian GP can be found below.

Right from the get-go everyone went out to warm their tyres and brakes, meaning the first laptimes set are insignificant. Additionally there is a huge scrap for having the best track position, which results in Max Esterson just blindly punting Oliver Goethe, ending the former’s session.

First blood for Fornaroli

Josha Dürksen is the first one to set a competing time with a 1:31.482, immediately followed by a 1:31.012 from Victor Martins. Jak Crawford, Sebastian Montoya and Gabriele Minì manage to slot themselves between Martins and Dürksen.

With a little over 20 minutes to go Dürksen improves to 1:30.618, but again Martins immediately betters him. Crawford goes to the top next, but is demoted by first Minì and then Leonardo Fornaroli.

The reigning F3 champion continues for another lap and improves to 1:29.948 to finish the first runs of F2 qualifying.

Sami Meguetounif in the meantime has been noted for failing to follow the race director’s notes regarding the pit lane entry.

With 12 minutes to go the dance for track position has again started, as everyone except Esterson heads out for a second attempt at a good result.

Minì to the top

Goethe sensibly goes first after being punted by Esterson, but his first lap is still way off the actual pace.

Martins goes to top, closely followed by Crawford. Kush Maini spins in turn 13, which means team mate Minì cannot push fully through the final sector. Montoya explores the turn 3 gravel, in what looks a difficult session for the Colombian driver.

Martins improves again as Lindblad goes purple in the first sector. The young Briton unfortunately cannot convert it into a good time.

F3 graduate Minì then goes to first place with a 1:29.286, as a few drivers are setting up for a final push lap. During that set-up Alex Dunne hits Esterson’s debris in turn 13, giving him a less then ideal preparation.

Durksen locks up braking for turn 1 and goes straight on, as we see that Minì and Crawford are under investigation for impeding.

In an ultimate attempt to qualify higher up, Fornaroli spins in turn 12, meaning Gabriele Minì takes the first F2 pole position of the season.

As always with F2 qualiying, the results are provisional, as six drivers face a 10 place grid penalty following testing infractions, and Minì and Crawford are under investigaion.
