General Motors has announced its intentions to enter Formula 1 as a power unit supplier from 2028 onwards, powering Andretti Cadillac, with an official registration with the FIA.
Andretti Cadillac’s hopes for a 2025 Formula 1 entry have just received a boost from Cadillac parent company General Motors, with the announcement they have officially registered with the FIA to provide Formula 1 power units from 2028 onwards.
This news comes following Andretti Cadillac’s application receiving approval from the FIA early last month, with the final decision on entry now laying with Formula.

In a press release today, GM president Mark Reuss expressed his confidence in the group’s ability to build a competitive Formula 1 power unit to power the American hopefuls.
“We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit,” said Reuss. “With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team.
“We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world.”

Reuss also commented on the history of racing from both Cadillac and Andretti, a sentiment echoed in the group’s press release.
“GM is committed to partnering with Andretti to race in F1,” Reuss told AP News. “The collaboration between Andretti-Cadillac brings together two unique entities built for racing, both with long pedigrees of success in motorsport globally.”
“With a long history of racing success, Cadillac most recently developed the 5.5L DOHC V-8 powertrain used in the 2023 IMSA and WEC seasons.” The press release stated. “With this powertrain, Cadillac Racing secured a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and swept top championship honours for the inaugural IMSA Grand Touring Prototype season.”

GM also commented on the benefits this new challenge will provide to their road car development and confirmed development of the technology required for the next generation Formula 1 power units is already underway.
“GM’s development and testing of prototype technology is already underway.” GM confirmed in a press release. “Engineering a F1 power unit will advance GM’s expertise in areas including electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high efficiency internal combustion engines, advanced controls and software systems.
“For more than a century, racing has provided a testbed for GM and Cadillac to transfer knowledge and technology between race cars and production vehicles. Cadillac’s V-Series performance portfolio, celebrating its 20th anniversary, seamlessly incorporates learnings from the track to the road.”
Today’s announcement places Andretti Cadillac in a strong position to negotiate their Formula 1 entry, putting the sports concerns at ease as they will now be supported as a works team from 2028 under the new plans.
