It’s qualifying time! Which driver will be starting the race from pole position today? Yesterday it was Jaguar domination in the duels, with Cassidy versus Evans, will we have a repeat of that today? Or will the Porsche-powered cars be capable of catching up to Jaguars? We’ll find out very shortly.
Group A of the qualifying consisted of Dennis, Cassidy, Vergne, Buemi, Bird, Hughes, Rast, Di Grassi, Sette Camara, Ticktum and Frijns. Green light and the drivers get on track immediately. The first driver to set a time was Cassidy, with 1:11.599s. He was fast replaced on the top by first Buemi and then Bird, showing how strong the Jaguar powertrains are in London this season. We’ll see how this dynamic will play out in the race, as the prize money is on the table today.
Buemi gives a signal to his team through the radio that it’s starting to rain, throwing now the weather into the mix. With two minutes left on the clock, Cassidy tops the session ahead of Buemi, Bird and Ticktum. Eventually, it’s Cassidy, Dennis, Buemi and Bird who make it through into the duels.
Group B consisted of Evans, Wehrlein, Gunther, Da Costa, Nato, Vandoorne, Mortara, Fenestraz, Lotterer, Muller and Merhi. The first driver to set a lap time from this group was Mortara, with the time of 1:11.783s. The times began to quickly tumble down and after the initial first lap, the drivers that would at this stage advance to the duels were Evans, Fenestraz, Nato and Gunther. Norman Nato was the first driver to bring the time down below 1:11s, with 1:10.954s. With six minutes left on the clock most of the drivers went back to they garages for a quick break before the last push. Four minutes left and everyone came out on track, to set the final lap times. At that moment, it was Nato, Evans, Mortara and Wehrlein who would advance into the duels. Nico Muller got a surprise appearance into the Top 4! The four drivers that advanced to the duels were: Evans, Muller, Nato and Vandoorne.
