Fastest in FP1 was Charles Leclerc, with Oscar Piastri quickest in the second session in front of his home fans. That did not tell the full story though as Mercedes looked extremely strong in race pace during FP2.
On Friday, Alex Albon and Sergio Pérez stopped on track. Arvid Lindblad also had a problem as his car conked out on pit exit, while Max Verstappen’s did in pit lane.
World Champion Lando Norris had gearbox problems that curtailed his running in FP1.
Multiple drivers had various power issues in the two sessions as well but could carry on.
At Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso did not even run in FP1. Lance Stroll did only three laps. They did manage 31 tours in FP2, however. Both drivers have only one battery available for the weekend.
In FP3, 2024 Australian GP winner Carlos Sainz saw his FP3 session come to a very early end when his car broke down as he tackled the penultimate corner.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Kimi Antonelli had a massive crash on the exit of turn 1 and into turn 2. There was an enormous amount of damage to his car. Luckily the Italian was fine.
Stroll did not make it out in this session. His AMR26 had an ICE issue as their woes continued.
