The first Feature Race of the 2026 FIA F3 Championship produced immediate drama at the Australian GP. Although Bruno del Pino entered Sunday’s Feature Race as the championship leader after winning the Sprint Race, the standings shifted significantly by the end of the weekend.
Ultimately, Ugo Ugochukwu delivered a commanding performance to secure victory in the Feature Race and take the championship lead with 25 points. Meanwhile, Freddie Slater and Taito Kato completed the podium after penalties reshaped the final classification.
In the Teams’ Championship, Van Amersfoort Racing holds the early advantage following a highly competitive weekend in Melbourne.
Feature Race drama at the 2026 Australian GP reshapes the F2 Championship
Sunday’s Feature Race dramatically reshaped the championship standings after a chaotic race at Albert Park. Before the start, PREMA Racing withdrew both James Wharton and Louis Sharp following their heavy Sprint Race collision, which reduced the grid to 28 drivers.
At lights out, pole-sitter Théophile Naël initially maintained the lead ahead of Ugo Ugochukwu and Freddie Slater. However, the race quickly intensified as drivers fought for position across the field. On Lap 4, Ugochukwu overtook his teammate to claim the lead and immediately began to control the pace.
Soon afterwards, the race’s first Safety Car appeared when Nandhavud Bhirombhakdi crashed into the barriers at Turn 12. The neutralisation compressed the field and created renewed battles throughout the pack. Despite the pressure following the restart, Ugochukwu remained composed and maintained his advantage at the front.
Later in the race, further incidents—including a collision involving Woo-hyun Shin and Matteo De Palo—triggered another Safety Car. Consequently, the race finished under neutralised conditions.
Meanwhile, several penalties significantly reshaped the final order. Naël received a five-second time penalty for a false start, while Noah Strømsted was handed a ten-second penalty for causing a collision earlier in the race. In addition, Nicola Lacorte received a post-race penalty for failing to activate the start set-up procedure.
As a result, Ugochukwu secured his maiden Feature Race victory and the championship lead. Slater finished second, while Taito Kato inherited third place after penalties reshuffled the classification. Meanwhile, Bruno del Pino finished fourth and also recorded the fastest lap.
Ugochukwu leads the early Drivers’ Championship
Following the F3 Feature Race at the 2026 Australian GP, the Drivers’ Championship order changed dramatically. Victory propelled Ugo Ugochukwu to the top of the standings with 25 points. Meanwhile, Freddie Slater and Bruno del Pino share second place on 18 points after strong performances across the weekend.
Further behind, Taito Kato sits fourth with 16 points, while Deligny completes the top five with 12 points. In addition, Maciej Gładysz occupies sixth place with 10 points, while Brad Benavides produced one of the standout drives of the race to climb to seventh in the standings after an impressive recovery through the field.
Van Amersfoort Racing tops the Teams’ standings
In the Teams’ Championship, Van Amersfoort Racing leads the standings with 30 points after consistent scoring across both races.
However, the competition remains extremely close. Campos Racing follows with 27 points thanks largely to Ugochukwu’s Feature Race victory, while ART Grand Prix sits third with 26 points. Meanwhile, Trident occupies fourth place with 20 points after solid performances throughout the weekend.
Further down the order, Rodin Motorsport, AIX Racing, and Hitech also opened their accounts during the Australian round.
Early momentum sets up intriguing 2026 title fight
Although only one round has been completed, the 2026 Formula 3 season has already delivered intense racing, unpredictable incidents, and rapidly changing championship momentum.
Initially, Bruno del Pino held the advantage following his Sprint Race victory. However, Ugo Ugochukwu’s dominant Feature Race performance quickly shifted the momentum toward Campos Racing.
At the same time, strong performances from Freddie Slater, Taito Kato, and Del Pino suggest that multiple drivers could challenge for the title as the season progresses.
With a tightly packed championship and several teams already demonstrating strong pace, the 2026 Formula 3 campaign promises to remain fiercely competitive in the races ahead.
