Irish and McLaren development driver Alex Dunne has been confirmed by Rodin Motorsport to drive for them in the 2025 F2 season. He will be driving alongside Australian Christian Mansell.
The driver from Offaly made an immediate impact after moving up to single-seaters in 2021. He took pole position at Spa-Francorchamps in Spanish F4, although he would finish the race in P3. The late Dilano van ‘t Hoff took the victory.
2022 was his breakthrough year as fans in Ireland and Europe noticed his talent. He won the British F4 championship after crushing the field, scoring 11 wins along the way. Arguably even more impressive was his run to P2 in the Italian F4 series, finishing behind new Mercedes F1 driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Dunne stepped up to GB3 in 2023, narrowly missing out on the title to Callum Voisin by 18 points. It was a great battle between the two and Joseph Loake all season.
2024 saw Dunne take another big step in his career as he joined MP Motorsport in Formula 3. A hugely impressive run to P2 in the qualifying race at Macau was key to this opportunity to progress further up the ranks.
Although he only finished 14th in the standings last year, the 19-year-old showed a lot of strong pace from Imola onwards. Errors from the team, himself and poor driving standards from a couple of his competitors cost him a chunk of points.
He was on the front row at both Spa and Monza as the Irishman really found his feet as the year went on. Two podiums also came in the Barcelona and Monza Sprints.
Despite the misfortune that befell him last year, Alex Dunne has managed to secure the funding required to compete in the 2025 F2 season.
