Ahead of the 2024 IndyCar season that begins in 26 days with the opening round at St. Petersburg, 22-year-old David Malukas has suffered a big blow during pre-season training.
The Chicago native is due to his make debut for McLaren following his move over the winter from Dale Coyne Racing. He secured two podiums during his time at DCR, both coming at Gateway in successive seasons.
However, his participation in the first round of the 2024 campaign is in serious doubt after a mountain bike crash at the weekend left him with a fracture in his hand.
Arrow McLaren told the official IndyCar site that a return date is currently unknown and the team needs to wait and see how the surgery goes first for Malukas.
Zach Veach is McLaren’s reserve driver. It’s unclear whether he would take Malukas’ spot if the young American was forced to miss St. Petersburg.
