Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack says the team would be delighted to continue with “integral” Alonso in 2025 beyond his current contract with the Silverstone based marque.
With a hectic driver market expected following the shock announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes at the end of the upcoming season, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso will be one to watch. With the Spaniard being one of the 14 drivers seeing their contracts conclude at the end of the year, all eyes will be on the vacant seat at Mercedes.
Two time champion Alonso will certainly be a lucrative option for Mercedes, but Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack is convinced he will continue with the team beyond his current contract.
“Yeah, I think the silly season has started much earlier than we were anticipating,” Krack said to the media. “We knew that it was always going to be an exciting year with a lot of speculation, but to be honest, we love Fernando [Alonso], we have a very good relationship with Fernando, we have a relationship whereby he is an integral member of the team.
“We have a relationship that is based on trust and openness and we will be delighted honestly to continue with Fernando into 2025 and the years after.”
Alonso, who managed to secure three podium finishes with the resurgent Aston Martin in 2023, despite a drop in form towards the second half of the season, echoed Krack’s sentiments. The Spaniard clearly stated his intentions to continue on with the team, highlighting their future potential as a key factor.
“My first priority will be always to sit down and discuss with Aston, they gave me the opportunity last year to join this organisation, which I’m very proud to be part of, with the new factory, with everything that is going on, there is a great future in this team, and I want to explore every possibility to race for many years here,” Alonso said.
Krack also discussed Lance Stroll, noting the team’s intent to retain both of their drivers beyond the 2024 season to maintain a consistent base as the team develops.
It would come as no surprise for Stroll to continue with the team beyond his existing contract given his familial ties with the Aston Martin brand, and Krack’s sentiments all but confirm the Canadian will continue on with Aston Martin.
“We have two great drivers,” Krack stated. “And to be honest, they’re so integrated into the team that we just do everything that we can to keep them.
“But, you know, we are quite confident that we can achieve what we want, which is to continue with both drivers in 2025 and the future.”
