Right at the green flag Colton Herta tries to get a head start on Scott Dixon, and the six-time champion is so busy defending that he forgets to brake in time and punts the Juncos-car of Romain Grosjean. F1 Australian GP Race | Carlos Sainz wins in dominant fashion from Leclerc and Norris after Verstappen’s brake explodes

After a tense qualifying yesterday the lights turned green for the formation lap. With Zhou Guanyu starting from the pitlane and Logan Sargeant having to give up his car to teammate Alex Albon there were just 18 cars on the grid, and at lights out it was Max Verstappen who had a clean getaway, while both Mercedes-drivers gained a place.

Carlos Sainz hails medical advancements for quick F1 return in Australian Grand Prix: “I’m confident I can jump in the car tomorrow”

Carlos Sainz was fully participating in the traditional Thursday media duties for the Australian Grand Prix after his appendectomy just 14 days prior. After feeling unwell on the Wednesday in Jeddah he did participate in practice on Thursday, but it soon became clear his appendix was misbehaving and surgery was necessary. He was replaced for the remainder of the weekend by Ollie Bearman who made an impressive debut for the Scuderia, being the first one to do so since Arturo Merzario.

Ocon says it’s “very clear” what Alpine needs to improve after running in traffic during F1 Saudi Arabian GP

Alpine has an underwhelming start of the 2024 season, to put it mildly. Completely off the pace in Bahrein the only reason they didn’t finish last was due to the misfortune of Logan Sargeant and Valtteri Bottas. A week later in Jeddah it wasn’t much better, as Pierre Gasly had to retire after one lap. Esteban Ocon managed to stay ahead of a few cars, but was helped by Kevin Magnussen severely dropping the pace to help his Haas-teammate Nico Hülkenberg.

Amidst all the commotion at Red Bull and the appendicitis suffered by Carlos Sainz, there was of course also a race to be driven.
