Franco Colapinto endured a difficult race at the 2026 F1 Australian GP, with the Alpine driver battling incidents, a penalty and a lack of pace on his way to a finish outside the points at Albert Park.

The Argentine driver, who lines up alongside Pierre Gasly at Alpine, has already faced a challenging start of the season. The Enstone-based squad struggled for outright speed in qualifying, leaving Colapinto to begin the race from P16.

What followed was an eventful opening lap and a long race that ultimately left the team searching for answers ahead of the next round.

The start of the race proved dramatic, with Colapinto forced to react quickly after a problem for Liam Lawson ahead created a dangerous situation on the grid. Speaking after the race, the Alpine driver described how fortunate he felt to escape the incident relatively unscathed.

“Well, in the start, we almost had a massive shunt. With Liam, as he got stuck on the grid, I was really lucky. To go through that lap 1, I was really, really lucky. You know, things that can happen with these new cars. It was very dangerous. I’m glad I went through that. I hit the wall a little bit with my rear right.

“But generally it was just a long race. We struggled for pace this weekend. We’re hoping much better after Bahrain. Then we got a stop and go. We lost another 30 seconds. It was just a tough afternoon.

“But I think there’s a lot of work to do. Hopefully, in China, we can bounce back stronger and learn after this race.”

The contact with the wall did not cause race-ending damage. However, it added to what was already a difficult race. Alpine’s pace had been inconsistent throughout the weekend.

The stop-and-go penalty made things worse for Colapinto and dropped him further down the order at the 2026 Australian GP.

Colapinto’s race became even more complicated when he was handed a 10-second stop-and-go penalty during the Grand Prix. The sanction cost him significant time and effectively ended any hopes of recovering positions in the tightly packed midfield.

When asked about the reason for the penalty, Colapinto admitted that he had yet to fully discuss the situation with his team.

“From what I understand, we touched the car after the 15-second mark. I haven’t talked to the team yet. We just need to understand and talk to them later.”

Alpine encouraged by Gasly’s point despite tough Australian GP

While Colapinto endured a frustrating afternoon, there was at least some encouragement for Alpine as teammate Pierre Gasly managed to bring home a point at the 2026 F1 Australian GP. That result provided a small boost for the team after a challenging opening weekend.

Colapinto acknowledged that Gasly’s result offered a positive sign for Alpine, particularly when it comes to the car’s race pace.

“That was positive, of course. I think we are more competitive in the race than in quali at the minute. We need to understand why and get better in both, but I think there is definitely more potential at the minute in the race, in the longer runs and in quali.”

Alpine will now turn its attention to the next race on the calendar, the Chinese Grand Prix, where the team hopes to unlock more performance. For Colapinto, the focus will be on learning from a difficult debut weekend for his first full season in F1 and returning stronger as the campaign continues.
