The Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore witnessed an exciting F1 Academy qualifying session under the lights, with Alpine’s Abbi Pulling clinching a decisive double pole position for the upcoming races.
Pulling, who had already demonstrated her prowess by setting the pace in Free Practice with a sub-2:04 lap, continued her stellar performance into qualifying. The British driver initially set the benchmark with a 2:04.66, only to see it bested by Doriane Pin’s 2:04.375. However, Pulling wasn’t finished. In a stunning display of skill and determination, she clocked the fastest time of the day — a 2:03.631 — securing her position at the front of the grid for both races.
The qualifying format for F1 Academy is unique, with each driver’s fastest lap determining the starting grid for Race 1, while their second-fastest lap sets the grid for Race 2.
Pin, who had overcome brake problems from free practice, initially held the top spot with a 2:03.905. However, she was unable to improve on this time in the crucial final minutes, ultimately settling for second place. Maya Weug impressed with a 2:04.179, placing her third on the grid between the two championship contenders.
Further down the order, Carrie Schreiner of Stake F1, showed improvement in her second run with a 2:04.553, securing fifth place. Ella Lloyd, the wildcard entry for the Singapore race, put in a commendable performance to place seventh, 1.2 seconds behind Pin.
The session wasn’t without its challenges. Chloe Chambers had a dramatic moment when she skidded through the last two corners but managed to keep her Haas-sponsored car on the track. Jessica Edgar found herself in 16th place before the second run with a time of 2:06.557.
As the chequered flag fell, it was clear that the Marina Bay Street Circuit had lived up to its reputation as a challenging track. The increasing grip as the session progressed allowed for faster times, but also demanded precision from the drivers.
With Pulling securing double pole, Pin close behind, and Weug in the mix, the stage is set for what promises to be two thrilling F1 Academy races under the Singapore lights. Motorsport fans around the world will undoubtedly be eagerly anticipating the green light for Race 1.
