Nico Hülkenberg returned to the cockpit after missing FP1 and logged a 1:20.201 to start off the late afternoon session.

The first driver into the 1:18s was Lewis Hamilton as a 1:18.961 put him almost 0.4s clear of Logan Sargeant.

Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez pumped in a 1:18.568 to beat Hamilton by almost 0.4s to go P1.

Pérez led Russell, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Sainz, Verstappen, Albon, Sargeant, Leclerc and Stroll after 10 minutes.

On the hard tyre, Lando Norris vaulted up to P6, 0.607s off the pace.

Verstappen improved on his second attempt, moving to within 0.156s of his teammate as the Mexican showed very strong pace.

A red flag was thrown with just under 44 minutes to go as Charles Leclerc crashed at high speed. He went over the kerb on the exit at turn 4, lost the car and spun, with the rear of his SF-24 hitting the barriers. A number of parts were damaged, including the front wing and floor.

Pérez, Verstappen, Russell, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Sainz, Norris, Albon, Sargeant, Leclerc was the top 10 when the green flag was thrown.

A 15-minute pause was required as the barrier had to be fixed.

George Russell got straight out there and did a 1:18.294 go quickest, 0.069s ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

A yellow flag was thrown as Zhou Guanyu had a massive spin on the exit of turn 4 like Leclerc. He was fortunate to avoid Sergio Pérez in the process as he ended up in the turn 5 run-off.

It was the McLaren of Lando Norris who delivered on the qualifying simulations as a 1:17.788 saw him end up fastest. He was the only driver who went below 78s on his lap.

World championship leader Max Verstappen was P2 as was 0.243s slower than the Brit, with Sainz and Perez also getting within half a second of Norris.

Russell, Magnussen, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Albon and Alonso completed the top 10.

Bottas, Sargeant, Piastri, Ocon, Hülkenberg, Gasly, Stroll, Leclerc, Tsunoda and Guanyu rounded out the timesheets.
