Duly regarded as one of the greatest engineers in motorsport history, Adrian Newey is heading to Aston Martin in 2025 on a multi-year deal. Following months of intense speculation and rumours linking him to top teams like Ferrari, the illustrious designer has decided to join the Silverstone-based team as a shareholder, along with assuming the official position of Managing Technical Partner.

With a career spanning several decades, Newey has played an instrumental role in designing cars that have won twelve constructors’ championships and thirteen drivers’ championships. After hugely successful stints with Williams and McLaren, the Brit became a part of the Red Bull family in 2006 and went on to build multiple title-winning cars for drivers like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

When it was announced back in May that Newey was parting ways with the Milton Keynes squad, several teams on the F1 grid vied to secure the services of the technical genius. In the end, owner Lawrence Stroll managed to sell him on Aston Martin’s F1 potential. Given that the British outfit is intent on building a formidable technical team and a car capable of challenging for the title in the near future, drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll appeared thoroughly excited about their successful recruit of Newey in the press conference held today at Silverstone.

When asked about the impact of the announcement and the momentum it will have for 2025, Stroll proclaimed that the signing of Newey marks the most exciting moment in the team’s history so far. Stating that the change of technical regulations in 2026 will offer them more opportunities to compete, the 25-year-old also commended the people who are already a part of Aston Martin’s ambitious journey.

“Yeah, it’s a huge day. I mean, there’s already a lot said, but I think it’s really the most exciting day in this team’s history. Adrian’s won more championships than anyone in the paddock, and now he’s wearing green.

“So it’s an extremely exciting day. And, you know, 2026 is not far away, a completely new set of regulations, a lot of opportunity. And we’re really constructing an incredible team with so many talented people that are already here. And now Adrian’s coming on board. So really exciting.”

On the topic of their past rivalry as parts of different title-contending teams, Alonso confessed that he perceives the legendary designer more as an inspiration than his nemesis. He also added that Newey and his cars have pushed other teams and drivers to expand their vision and compete at a higher level.

“I think, yeah, as you said, [we’ve] been racing against each other for many years. I would say that he was more an inspiration. And I think thanks to Adrian and his talent and cars, I think we all got better as a driver, as engineers, teams, you know, we all had to raise the bar thanks to him to be able to compete.”

Alonso reiterated that he is looking forward to working alongside the British designer and capitalising on the learning opportunities that the team will provide him on and off track. Additionally, the two-time world champion declared that Aston Martin is the team of the future with the arrival of Newey, new infrastructure, collaboration with Aramco, and their future partnership with Honda.

“And I think now it’s an incredible day for the team. Laurence’s vision is taking shape with this building, with Adrian, with Honda, Aramco, new wind tunnel, you know, so definitely the team of the future, I would say.

“And yeah, for me, it’s going to be an incredible opportunity professionally to work with Adrian and to keep wearing this green colour, which I’m very proud to be part of. But also it’s on a personal side, an incredible opportunity to work with these people that, you know, you can learn so much from them, you know. And I think I was talking with Lance a few weeks ago, the incredible opportunity we have, you know, to witness and to work with Laurence and with everyone at Aston Martin, which definitely we are learning a lot of things on track, off track as well. And it’s a part of our growth, you know, personally as well.”
