In a recent development, the FIA Ethics Committee has concluded its investigation into alleged interference during Formula One events in 2023. Following a independent inquiry, the committee found no evidence to support claims against FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
According to the official press release, “the Ethics Committee were unanimous in their determination that there was no evidence to substantiate allegations of interference of any kind involving the FIA President.”
The investigation, prompted by concerns of potential interference in sporting decisions during Formula One events in Saudi Arabia and Las Vegas, was managed by the FIA Compliance Department and reviewed by a six-person ethics body. Over the course of 30 days, the inquiry included interviews with 11 witnesses.
“Allegations against the FIA President were unsubstantiated,” stated the press release, “and strong evidence beyond any reasonable doubt was presented to support the determination of the FIA Ethics Committee.”
The President was cleared of any wrongdoing regarding the alleged interference with steward decisions involving Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix 2023, and the track certification process for the Las Vegas Grand Prix 2023. The certification process for the Las Vegas Grand Prix 2023 was completed and approved in due time, as highlighted in the press release.
“The President’s complete cooperation, transparency, and compliance throughout the process during this investigation was greatly appreciated,” the press release further emphasised.
The FIA Compliance Department, led by Compliance Officer Paolo Basarri, has been instrumental in ensuring the integrity of FIA activities since its establishment in 2017. In line with its commitment to transparency and ethical conduct, the FIA launched an Ethics and Compliance Hotline in May 2020, allowing individuals to report potential misconduct related to various categories, including violations of ethical principles and sports integrity.
“The allegations against the FIA President were thoroughly investigated, and we found no evidence to support them,” stated a spokesperson for the Ethics Committee. “President Sulayem cooperated fully throughout the process, demonstrating transparency and compliance.”
The FIA Ethics Committee, established in 2012, is tasked with safeguarding the integrity and reputation of motorsport, automobile mobility, and tourism. Comprising six members from diverse backgrounds, the committee investigates possible infringements of FIA ethical principles and submits reports in accordance with FIA statutes.
The conclusion of the investigation reaffirms the commitment of the FIA to uphold fairness and integrity within the sport of Formula One, ensuring that decisions are made impartially and in accordance with established regulations.
