The second free practice session for the South Africa round saw again Rene Rast first out with his Mclaren, but the fastest lap on the early stages was signed by Sacha Fenestraz in 1:10.869.
All the drivers went quickly on track in order to try and get some more running time in before the beginning of the qualifying session, as yesterday’s session was rather fragmented, with two red flags in half hour.
Ten minutes in the session, Maxi Gunther for Maserati leads with a 1:09.305. Home talent Kelvin van der Linde is also a notable mention after the issues which affected his performance yesterday and forced him to stop running, now comfortably in the top 5.
Notable assent from yesterday and today’s top fastest drivers are both Porsche drivers: third place finisher in the last Hyderabad round Antonio Felix Da Costa and championship leader Pascal Wehrlein, respectively in P19 and P18. Wehrlein was able to recover a bit of pace in the final minutes, after struggling quite a bit, putting his Porsche in the top ten.
Nio’s Sergio Sette Camara struggled from a small spin at Turn 1, but was able to quickly return on track. Oliver Rowland had the exact same issue at the end of the session
Ten minutes to the end of the session, Fenestraz puts Nissan back on top of the timings sheet with a 1:09.022, followed by both McLaren drivers
Towards the end of the session, the first driver to go under the 1:08s was Sam Bird, quickly followed by his Jaguar teammate Mitch Evans. However, in the end, both times were improved firstly by yesterday’s practise leader and only points scorer for Maserati Edoardo Mortara in 1:08.425, then by Nick Cassidy in 1:08.114 , with Dan Ticktum completing the top three.
