Franco Colapinto was confirmed early January as part of Alpine’s reserve driver pool, joining Paul Aaron for the 2025 season.
The Argentinian did an exclusive interview this week, sitting down to talk about his role within the team and the goals he aligns himself with.
“It’s a team that deserves to be at the top and fighting for championships. It’s a pleasure to be here. To get to know the factory, to meet the whole team, and to see all the people working to help this team rise. It’s a privilege to meet them. I have a lot to learn, but it’s been a great first day at Alpine,”
“My role in the team will be to assist and to support in any way I can. To help bring the team back to the top, improve the car wherever possible, and contribute in every way I can. I’ll be paying close attention to anything that happens. Of course, always staying ready in case I need to step in at some point,” continued Colapinto.
The road to Formula 1 for Colapinto
The 21-year-old quickly rose in popularity after replacing American driver Logan Sergeant at Williams Racing mid-season in 2024.
“Today was my first time in the simulator, driving one of the team’s cars. Obviously, it’s a simulation, but it’s a way to better understand how the car works—the balance, the set-up—start getting familiar with the steering wheel and the different functions drivers can use during a race. I’m very happy with how the day went.
“We’re going to work hard to bring Renault and the whole team to where they deserve to be—fighting for championships and victories. I know we’re part of a great team, a strong group of people who want to be at the top and win races and podiums,” says Colapinto.
Moreover, his personality and ease in front of fans have quickly became the reasons fans adored the young man, as well as the speed he brought with him on track.
His racing resume speaks volume
It’s understandable why Oliver Oakes and his team wanted the fearless young gun in their driver pool; his talent exceptional for his age, proving he is the future of Formula 1.
Colapinto has quite the racing resume, placing 9th in the 2024 F2 Drivers championship, even with missing races due to his F1 grid promotion.
He has completed two seasons in Formula 3 and one season in Formula 2. He made his way up the ranks as needed with the support of his teams, sponsors, and the Williams Racing Academy.
Lastly, Colapinto expressed his hope for his move, including his fans and their support. In fact, he is filled with gratitude for his opportunity in F1.
“I hope the fans are as happy as I am to be here, to return to F1, and to be part of a team with such a rich history and legacy. For me, this is incredibly meaningful, and I’m enjoying every moment of it.
“I hope the fans are feeling the same excitement I am, looking forward to seeing me soon, and that we can enjoy this journey together. This is a huge step forward for the entire team and me. I’m extremely happy to have joined a team like Alpine, along with Renault—a brand with such a long and proud history in motorsport,” says Colapinto.
