Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025 brought with it high expectations, but the Australian Grand Prix proved to be a difficult start to the season. With wet conditions, unexpected challenges, and a less-than-ideal race result, Hamilton has taken key learnings from the weekend and is already looking ahead to improvements for the F1 Chinese GP.

Hamilton learning from Australia

Speaking in his print media session on Thursday, Hamilton acknowledged that his first race weekend with Ferrari was a steep learning curve. “To this point, I think I’m still having to witness and take a view and see how the team operates,” he admitted.

While testing provided some insight, the race weekend presented new dynamics that he is still adapting to.

“It’s different to testing—how they like to set the car up, the changes they like to make during the weekends. I think as I get more and more comfortable and more knowledgeable about the car, I can start making more decisions.”

Despite the challenges, Hamilton remains optimistic and determined. “It wasn’t the race that we wanted, but it’s not a moment to throw the toys out the pram,” he explained.

“One small thing could have made a big difference in our result, but we moved forward. Everyone’s still motivated. You’ve got everyone here with their heads high. The energy is still good in the garage. We’re not going to be defined by that one race.”

Hamilton addresses Ferrari’s true pace ahead of Chinese GP

While McLaren dominated in Melbourne, many believe Ferrari’s performance was not a true reflection of its potential. Hamilton shares this perspective, expressing hope that the team can turn things around in China and fight to be the quickest behind the Woking-based team.

“I think our car looked pretty decent on Friday and even on Saturday morning. I don’t think Sunday can be… Again, I think it’s a bit of a one-off.”

Ahead of the Chinese GP, Hamilton remains focused on Ferrari’s development and performance gains, although he is fully aware of the speed and low tyre deg McLaren had at Albert Park in all conditions.

“It has only been one race. Yes, McLaren has done a great job and they’re looking very strong. I can’t judge that from one race. They look very quick on the long runs and testing. The pace in the race and on all conditions, they look fantastic.”

Hamilton acknowledges that McLaren currently has an edge but believes Ferrari has the ability to close the gap with a very long season still ahead.

Unlike former teammate George Russell, he won’t throw the towel in verbally regarding the championship.

“That’s not how we’re approaching each weekend,” he said.

“We’re still taking the time to learn the car and to be able to extract more from it. We definitely have work to do. I don’t think we’re on the pace of the McLarens. I think we can close the gap.”
