Liam Lawson’s superb drive from 19th to 9th in the 2024 United States Grand Prix has earned him praise from all corners of the Formula 1 paddock, with Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner labelling his performance as “fast” and “courageous”.
After starting from the back of the grid, the young New Zealander displayed a fighting spirit and undeniable skill, putting on an impressive recovery drive that caught the attention of many.
The highlight of Lawson’s race came during a fierce battle with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, showing that the 22-year-old is unafraid to go head-to-head with one of F1’s veterans. Christian Horner was particularly impressed by this aspect of his performance:
“Yeah, look, I think if you’re getting into a spat and getting your elbows out with Fernando on your first race back in, you’re doing all right,” said Horner.
“And I think that he drove an exceptional race today from 19th to 9th. He was fast. He was courageous. And I thought it was an excellent comeback for him.”
Lawson’s ability to climb through the field, paired with his calm demeanour under pressure, showcased his growth and potential in Formula 1. Horner also compared his performance favourably to Franco Colapinto, a young driver turning heads, but noted Lawson’s strong showing in such a competitive field.
“I think Liam shone equally as brightly as some of Franco’s earlier races as well,” said Horner. “At a track he’s never been to before, against a quick teammate, to go from the back of the grid to P9, it’s a good performance.”
In the midst of several midfield battles, Lawson executed key overtakes, including one on Alonso, further solidifying his status as a driver to watch. His ninth-place finish also comes at a pivotal time, as the 2024 season nears its end, with teams considering future driver line-ups.
While no long-term seat has been guaranteed for Lawson at Red Bull, Horner’s praise signals a strong endorsement of his potential.
“Franco’s turning heads, but Liam Lawson’s performance in Formula 2 and now this race has been hard to ignore. He’s proving that he can be consistent and fast,” Horner added.
