It’s time for the first practise session of the weekend at Indianapolis ahead of the Indy road course race for tomorrow. After a couple of first explorative laps, everyone returns to the pits, with the first timed lap signed by Ganassi’s Kyffin Simpson in 1:10.413s.
The rookie is joined by fellow teammate Linus Lundqvist and newly-confirmed Theo Pourchaire behind the wheel of Arrow McLaren’s car no. 6.
With an hour to go in the session, Newgarden leads as the first driver to sign a lap in the 1:09s, followed by Rasmussen and Pourchaire, but only eight drivers are out of the pits.
The Penske driver spun and stalled on track shortly after, stopping on the grass at Turn 13. The session was red flagged to allow for the recovery of the car of the reigning Indy 500 winner, just like it had happened during the first practise session at Barber.
In the meantime, Rinus Veekay is stuck at the garage due to a water leak. Newgarden is awarded a five minutes time penalty for the session due to causing the red flag.
Running resumed with 55 minutes on the clock, but is was short lasted as Graham Rahal stopped on track at the start line due to an engine issue. He was swiftly wheeled away and cars returned on track three minutes later.
Armstrong returns immediately to the pits however after mentioning “something wrong” with his car, only for his Honda engine to catch fire shortly after for a third red flag in only thirty minutes of practice. He will have to install his third engine of the year ahead of the fourth race in calendar.
Session resumed with 37 minutes to go, with Ferrucci and Grosjean almost colliding while fighting for track position.
At the half hour mark Newgarden’s earlier 1:09.815s is still the fastest time, with Lundgaard a close second 0.140s behind and the only RLL driver without issues, as Fittipaldi locks up on track.
Veekay is able to avenge his earlier water troubles as he jumps to P1 with a 1:09.787s, while McLaren’s Rossi suffers from lockup and ends out of track. Reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou improves to P3.
The Ganassi driver then had a moment at Turn 4, but he is able to keep his car on track, as O’Ward becomes the fastest man on track with a fast lap speed of 125.938mph, bested by Power with the first 126mph of the day.
The Penske driver had a close moment while coming out of the pits with Kirkwood. With 7 minutes to go on the clock Canapino goes fastest signing a 1:09.373s, for a Chevrolet provisional top 5. In the final moments of the session championship leader Colton Herta bolts up to the top spot.
Pourchaire stops on track at Turn 12 mentioning no power on the radio, for the first engine issue on the Chevy side of today with less than a minute on the clock.
The Andretti Global driver holds the top spot for the first session in the Month of May, followed by JHR’s impressive Canapino and Will Power. Veekay and Ericsson round off the top 5, with Lundgaard, McLaughlin, Rosenqvist, Rossi and Ferrucci. Tune in a couple hours for FP2!
