Ivan Domingues feels the new FIA F3 will help the rookies in the field adjust to the championship at a quicker rate.
The Portuguese driver is making his debut in the series with Van Amersfoort after racing for them in FRECA and the Euro 4 Championship.
Domingues believes the new car will allow the drivers embarking on their first season in FIA F3 to get up to speed and challenge the more experienced drivers.
The new FIA F3 car isn’t too different from last season
He told Pit Debrief and other media: “I think this new generation of F3 will make us rookies be a bit more in equal terms with the guys that are doing the second and third year, even though the differences from that last generation car are not that that huge.”
There are multiple talented rookies across the FIA F3 grid. GB3 champion Louis Sharp is eagerly anticipating his series debut.
The new FIA F3 car was designed to create more overtaking opportunities than its predecessor and features 380 horsepower.
DRS is still active on the rear wing to help boost passing for Domingues and his competitors while the car will run on 16” tyres over this season.
New cars have levelled the playing field previously
A new car has had a history of levelling the playing field in junior championships as George Russell and Lando Norris were title contenders in their rookie F2 season in 2018.
The new car should allow for more competitive action in FIA F3. Domingues added that adaptability will be a key factor over the season.
“It’s in the end of the day, we’ll be the ones who adapt faster to the new tracks and to the conditions. And now the championship works will be the ones who will get the better results.”
Domingues has yet to make the headlines in his single-seater career, with no wins since graduating from karting.
FIA F3 will be a significant step up with a much quicker car and 30 drivers on the track which can cause chaos in qualifying.
