Off the line, Jake Dennis retained the lead. At turn 8, Norman Nato made a beautiful pass on Cassidy to take 2nd, with the Jaguars of Evans and Birds keeping P4 and P5.
Ticktum, Mortara, Günther, Buemi and Hughes completed the top 10.
However, Nato would find himself swamped by the two Kiwis at the start of the next lap as they passed him for 2nd and 3rd.
On lap 2, there was a big incident in regards to the championship. Mitch Evans locked the rear axle and hit fellow New Zealander Nick Cassidy into turn 7.
Fortunately the Envision driver wasn’t hit on the head as Evans’ Jaguar went over the top of his car.
While Cassidy could continue at the back, Evans’ car was badly damaged.
With the pack behind bunching up, Vergne and Wehrlein crunched cars in front but could continue initially, but Vergne eventually had to pit to change his wing.
Although he also kept going, the Jaguar was way off the back after the Safety Car came in. Eventually they had to call it quits on lap 5.
Dennis led Nato, Bird, Ticktum, Mortara, Buemi, Günther, Da Costa, Wehrlein and Lotterer.
The French driver would then have a pop into turn 10 for the lead but damaged his front wing trying to make the move.
After Nato took his first attack mode, it allowed Sam Bird to put the squeeze on Jake Dennis and apply relentless pressure.
Dennis led Bird, Nato, Buemi, Ticktum, Mortara, Günther, Lotterer, Wehrlein and Vandoorne halfway through the race.
Both Mahindra’s had to pit. Di Grassi was shown to have heavy damage to his car after an incident. Replays showed contact with Da Costa into turn 8 as the Brazilian touched the wall. The Portuguese driver had found himself towards the back after botching a move into turn 7 and going straight on.
Championship contender Nick Cassidy worked his way through up to P11 before he had to start taking attack modes.
When Sam Bird took his attack mode, he dropped behind Buemi. Critically it took him time to get by the Swiss and stayed in P3 as Nato took his last attack mode.
With 5 laps to go, Dennis kept the lead from Nato, Bird, Mortara, Buemi, Günther, Wehrlein, Vandoorne, Ticktum and Da Costa.
It was the perfect day for Jake Dennis as the win, pole + fastest lap gave him maximum points to reclaim the title lead and take a big lead into London.
