Hughes and Vandoorne both served a three places grid penalty, whereas Sette Camara had a 30 places grid drop for taking up a new engine and a former crash, which was converted in a driver through.
The first leg of the last round of the season saw Evans holding on to his lead at the race start, with Wehrlein at first succeeding in getting P3 from Nato.
Dennis made contact with Frijns, sending him into the wall, with the Envison driver touching a Maserati and collecting Bird as well. The first safety car of the day was thus issued, to remove Frijns’s car and its debris.
Rowland amnd Muller had made contact as well, with the ABT driver losing a couple of spots due to the fact that he had to pit to change a tire.
Racing resumed on Lap 4, with Cassidy up to P15 already. The Jaguar driver tried to take up his first Attack Mode, but failed to activate the sensor and lost a couple of spots. Vandoorne and Fenestraz were successful, with the Penske driver battling with Bird but losing a place as well.
Dennis, who has received a 10s time penalty, and Vergne made contact at Turn 16, with Rowland and Da Costa coming in contact only a few turns after at the final corner. All the runners were able to resume their run without the need for a safety car, but Da Costa, among the championship contenders up to now, picked up a suspension issue and had to retire the car.
On Lap 9 Buemi takes the lead of the race with a move on the inside of Turn1, but Evans is a close second.
Dennis made slight contact with Cassidy while overtaking him for P11. The reigning champion wrestled his way aggressively back up the order after losing a number of places due to his earlier crash. On Lap 12 Hughes stopped on track.
The Kiwi driver reports steering issues following the incident, while Dennis is awarded another 5s time penalty for the crash with Vergne as he overtakes Daruvala for P10.
This was the top 10 on Lap 15: Buemi, Evans, Wehrlein, Gunther, Nato, De Vries, Fenestraz, Mortara, Vergne and Dennis, with the Andretti driver taking P9 from the Frenchman with yet another close, bold move.
Rowland is also awarded a 5s time penalty for his earlier crash with Da Costa. Buemi takes his first attack mode, leaving Evans in the lead of the race. On the following Lap 17 it’s the Jaguar driver’s turn to take up the extra power, marking the Swiss driver’s return in the top spot.
Dennis picks up a third time penalty, this time for the scuffle with Cassidy. The championship leader in the meantime tries to overtake Vandoorne on the outside, and he is successful, but also collects the wall on his way out.
Buemi slides back into P3, behind Evans and Wehrlein who is yet to pick up an Attack mode. The German driver, who has 2% extra power over Evans and 3% over Buemi, takes the lead on Lap 22.
On the following lap he gets his first attack mode, and is able to resume his P1 after a close call with Evans. Nato tries to overtake Fenestraz but he is unsuccessful.
On Lap 28 Wehrlein takes his second Attack Mode and once again manages to hold off Evans nearing the end of his extra power in an even tighter duel. Buemi takes up his second as well, leaving Gunther in P3.
Evans, who mentions on the radio he doesn’t have the energy to fight back the Porsche driver for the lead, is then overtaken two laps later by the Maserati colleague, for what can be called a terrible day overall for Jaguar.
Nato hits the wall at Turn 1 after making contact with Fenestraz, who loses his wing in the battle, almost as payback for his Berlin DNF.
Dennis and Fenestraz have a close fight for P6, but the Nissan driver is able to keep him at bay until the following lap, where he gets past at Turn 1. A safety car is issued to remove debris, but racing resume on Lap 34.
Wehrlein holds off for the lead, but Gunther suddenly slows down on track from P2, coming to a stop.
2 laps were added to the 37 already completed, with a full course yellow issued to remove his car.
Daruvala and Vergne as well had an incident from the top 10, for even worse news for Maserati asd the Indian driver is spun around by the Frenchman and loses his wing.
Frijns is brought to the hospital for further checks post his crash.
Racing resumes on Lap 37, with Evans trying to close up on Wehrlein, ahead of Buemi, De Vries, Dennis, Fenestraz, Mortara, Muller, Cassidy and Bird. The championship leader will definitely gain some more spots with all the time penalties swirling around. Fenestraz is awarded a 5s time penalty for his earlier collision.
Wehrlein takes the win in London and the championship lead as well, with 5 points of advantage over Evans going into the final race of the season. He shares the podium with Evans and Buemi, with an impressive double top 5 finish for Mahindra. Muller, Cassidy, Bird, Vandoorne and Nato complete the top 10.
