Williams Racing Academy driver Luke Browning is set for his Abu Dhabi FP1 debut at the 2024 Grand Prix, marking his first appearance at a Formula 1 weekend.

The young British driver will participate in the first Free Practice session (FP1), fulfilling Williams’ second mandated rookie driver session for the season. Additionally, Browning will take part in the post-season Young Driver Test, providing him with further opportunities to showcase his potential in the FW46.

The Abu Dhabi FP1 debut represents a pivotal step in Luke Browning’s journey to Formula 1. Reflecting on the opportunity, the 21-year-old shared:

“It’s an honour to be driving a Williams F1 car for the first time in Abu Dhabi. To have the chance to not only take part in the Young Driver Test but also Free Practice is incredibly special. A huge thank you to everyone at Williams Racing for supporting my development as part of the Williams Racing Driver Academy and entrusting me with the FW46. I’ll be working hard to prepare and make the most of the opportunity.”

A stellar 2024 for Luke Browning

Browning has enjoyed an impressive 2024 campaign, beginning in Formula 3 with standout performances that included pole positions in Austria and Great Britain, as well as Feature Race wins in Bahrain and Austria. His consistent form kept him in contention for the Formula 3 championship until the final round in Monza, where he ultimately finished third in the standings.

Mid-season, Browning stepped up to Formula 2 with ART Grand Prix, debuting at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. His transition to the higher category was seamless, scoring points on his debut and proving his adaptability and talent. He will continue with ART for the final two rounds of the Formula 2 season.

A pathway to F1

Luke Browning’s inclusion in the FP1 session and Young Driver Test underscores Williams Racing’s commitment to nurturing young talent through its Driver Academy. The programme, which most recently propelled Franco Colapinto to an F1 race seat, focuses on supporting drivers at every stage of their development, both on and off the track.

Sven Smeets, Sporting Director of Williams Racing, praised Browning’s progression and contributions to the team throughout 2024:

“Luke has had an impressive Formula 3 season and has taken the transition to Formula 2 in his stride, performing well from his first outing in Baku. Throughout this year, he has made important contributions to the team through his development work and has demonstrated rapid progress in his understanding, maturity, and race craft.”

“We are now looking forward to giving Luke the opportunity to drive the FW46 in Abu Dhabi as the next step in his development as a Williams Racing Academy driver.”

The FP1 session and Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi represent a key moment for Browning as he continues his journey up the ladder. With a strong foundation laid in Formula 3 and Formula 2, and the support of Williams Racing, Browning is poised to take another significant step towards his goal of competing in Formula 1.
