The NEOM McLaren Formula E Team is ready to tackle the high-altitude challenge of the Mexico City E-Prix. Building on the momentum of Taylor Barnard’s sensational podium debut in São Paulo, the team aims for further success at one of the most iconic circuits on the calendar.
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is known for its high-altitude thrills, providing a unique challenge for Formula E teams. As the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team heads to Mexico City, confidence is high following Taylor Barnard’s remarkable podium finish at the chaotic São Paulo opener.
The Brazil race saw rookie Taylor Barnard secure third place, showcasing composure and strategic prowess far beyond his years. Starting from P3 after a shuffled grid due to incidents and red flags, Barnard demonstrated maturity by managing his energy reserves and capitalising on opportunities.
Team Principal Ian James highlighted the achievement but acknowledged areas for improvement, saying, “Back from a much-needed break, the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team returns to the well-known backdrop of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City.”
“As a team, we will be looking to continue the positive momentum from São Paulo, where Taylor achieved his first-ever Formula E podium in his first season as a full-time driver.”
Brazil in review
The São Paulo E-Prix was a race of extremes. Mitch Evans stole the show, becoming the first Formula E driver to win from last place after an extraordinary drive through the field. The race was marked by drama, including crashes, red flags, and penalties, but NEOM McLaren’s resilience shone through.
Sam Bird, despite setbacks, played a vital role in supporting Barnard’s podium push. Barnard’s energy-saving strategy paid off in the final laps, with his teammate ensuring he held position against rivals.
Reflecting on Brazil, Barnard expressed his excitement for Mexico, he said, “I’m very excited to be going racing in Mexico City.”
“Coming from the last round, I think it was a very successful event for us as a team, and we’re looking to build on that with more points and hopefully another podium, which would be great! Everyone’s had a bit of a reset over the past few weeks, so everyone’s ready to go. I can’t wait to get racing again.”
High expectations for McLaren in Mexico
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, with its thin air and demanding tyre wear, promises another unpredictable race. Sam Bird is eager to experience the electric atmosphere of Mexico’s passionate fans. “I’m very much looking forward to getting out to Mexico City for round two of this year’s World Championship and our first race of 2025,” he explained.
“It’s always a fun event with probably the biggest fan attendance, and I love seeing all the fans in the stadium section, cheering on the drivers.”
“I can’t wait to get out there and showcase what our car can do this year.”
With a rookie making waves and a team keen to iron out its operational issues, NEOM McLaren heads into Mexico with a mix of optimism and determination. Will the team’s momentum from Brazil carry them to further success at the high-altitude circuit?
