As a result of today’s qualifying, McLaren’s Lando Norris will start tomorrow’s Singapore Grand Prix race in fourth place just behind Sainz on pole, Russell and Leclerc. Speaking after qualifying, the British driver says that he is very happy about the result and the same goes for the team thanks to the big updates brought to Singapore.
“There’s probably always something, but I was very happy. I pretty much did my best corner in every corner, just my best lap altogether. The team had done a great job. I think we definitely took some steps forward and that paid off today, especially on the track which is not easy to ever take on. So a good position for tomorrow and then hopefully we can turn that into some good points.”
He added his best chance to get on the podium is likely to be making places on the first lap as it’s pretty impossible later on in terms of racing and overtaking around the narrow street circuit.
“First lap, with Safety Cars and Pit stops. In terms of racing and overtaking, it’s pretty impossible, but there’s still a lot of unknowns with, you know, degradation and the full 60 laps. I don’t think anyone’s really done more than what, 10, 12, 13 laps in a row.
“So a lot of things for us to find out the pace is there, maybe not enough to compete against Ferrari and stuff, but yeah, it’s tough. We don’t know and I think we’ll find some more stuff out today, but the race space from Mercedes is always very strong to keep Lewis behind me and a couple of others is probably the bigger task for me tomorrow.”
The British driver was also asked to share his opinion about Lance Stroll’s crash which resulted in the Canadian being out in Q1. He said he didn’t see what happened at the time. Norris was the first driver to come around to the scene of the accident at the final corner and had to avoid a tyre that ripped off the AMR23.
“I didn’t see like what happened or anything. I mean if you’re going to crash there, it’s going to be a big crash and it was so nice to see that he jumped out and he was all good because it is a nasty place to crash.
“It gets scary initially when you’re going flat out and it (tyre) catches you by surprise quite a bit. So reacting to all the debris and tyre probably is the most dangerous thing and obviously the car itself, but I tried to do the best I could. It was okay, that’s the main thing,” he concluded.
