The 2026 Australian GT season will launch in emphatic fashion as more than 50 cars prepare to take on the iconic Phillip Island Circuit during the opening round of the Shannons SpeedSeries. Both GT World Challenge Australia (GTWC) powered by AWS and Monochrome GT4 Australia will begin their 2026 campaigns with strong grids and rising anticipation.
Moreover, the event promises intense competition, diverse manufacturer representation and a growing international presence, reinforcing the upward trajectory of GT racing in Australia.
Record-breaking momentum in GT4 Australia
Monochrome GT4 Australia continues to gather pace. Notably, a record 34-car grid will feature at the season opener, underlining the category’s rapid rise since becoming a standalone series with SRO Motorsports Australia in 2024.
Furthermore, the category has attracted drivers from across Australia and overseas, all eager to secure a place on an increasingly competitive grid. Defending champions return across multiple classes, adding continuity and rivalry to the mix. Silver Cup winner Tom Hayman will defend his crown, while Aaron Seton and Jason Gomersall aim to retain their Silver-Am title. Meanwhile, two-time Am Cup champion Jacob Lawrence steps up to the Silver-Am class alongside 2024 class champion Lachlan Mineeff.
In addition, eight manufacturers will compete at the opener, highlighting strong global support and ensuring a varied and exciting field.
Expanded manufacturer presence in 2026 GT World Challenge Australia
At the same time, GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS strengthens its 2026 lineup with the arrival of McLaren. This addition raises the total number of manufacturers to seven for the 2026 season.
Consequently, McLaren joins an already impressive roster that includes Audi, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche. As a result, fans can expect fierce on-track battles between some of the world’s most prestigious automotive brands.
Additionally, the driver lineup blends experienced competitors with fresh talent, while organisers hint that further high-profile announcements will follow in the coming days.
Season launch set for LIQUI MOLY GT Festival
Looking ahead, the season officially begins at the LIQUI MOLY GT Festival Phillip Island from 27–29 March. This event forms Round 1 of the Shannons SpeedSeries and will feature all four races broadcast live on FOX SPORTS and Kayo SPORTS.
Therefore, fans across the country will have front-row access to what promises to be a thrilling opening weekend.
As both categories continue to expand, confidence within the paddock remains high. The combination of record entries, manufacturer diversity and international interest signals a bright future for the sport.
“We’re really pleased with the response from teams and manufacturers for the upcoming season and having more than 50 cars for the season opener at Phillip Island reassures us that we’re on the right path,” McMellan said.
“We also couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year in Monochrome GT4 Australia with the 34-grid for Phillip Island at capacity. We have also had a lot of interest from previous competitors to join us at later rounds, while also welcoming a number of new drivers too to the fold.
“I am really looking forward to the continued growth for GT racing in Australia, which I would like thank all the competitors, manufacturers and our partners for their unwavering support.”
Ultimately, the 2026 season stands poised to deliver some of the most competitive and entertaining GT racing Australia has seen in years.
