Everyone was curious to see how Mercedes was going to perform this weekend, after the updates in the car. Russell said the updates were being planned since shortly after the test in Bahrain.

The Mercedes driver was very confident about the changes in the car.

“There is definitely no scares with this new update, things’ve been working out as expected. No real concerns,” he said.

“I see no reason why in Barcelona it won’t perform as we expect and hopefully we make a small jump.”

Although the results of Q1 and Q2 seemed positive, the British driver wasn’t feeling that the result at the end of Q3 was a reflection of his full potential. He got asked whether it was the most he could achieve this Saturday, “Not really,” he replied. “It could be more there. Q1 and Q2 were reasonably promising, we were so close to Ferrari and Fernando.

“I pushed for more and paid the price and ultimately went slower than my potential, so kicking myself a little bit because of that, but I would have been equally disappointed had I been a tenth behind and not pushed that little bit extra.

“That’s the price you pay sometimes, you can’t get it right every time but I’m pretty disappointed.”

Looking at Q2, George Russell and Fernando Alonso had a time difference of less than one tenth of a second, yet, the Spaniard will start at the front of the grid from P2 while Russell is behind both Ferraris, Alpines and his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
