Logan Sargeant was in a very honest mood following a disastrous Spanish Grand Prix weekend for Williams.
The Grove-based team was clearly the slowest in qualifying. Albon and Sargeant qualified P19 and P20, with the Floridian 0.357s slower than his teammate.
With Albon starting from pit lane as he took on new power unit elements, Sargeant started P19, gaining a spot on the opening lap as he passed Ricciardo. That was as good as it got as he dropped to last.
The 23-year-old struggled with massive degradation, getting lapped twice and finished 21s behind the car in front, Yuki Tsunoda.
Understandably, the Williams driver was not too happy post-race, declaring it one of his worst races in the sport.
“Yeah, it was a bit of a disaster, to be honest. I think it’s probably one of the worst races I’ve ever had in F1.
“The degradation was just accumulating so quickly and massively. I felt like I was managing the tyre from lap one on every stint.
“Not a lot of fun, pretty terrible weekend from start to finish, so I’m ready to get out of here.”
Told by his race engineer he could push in the closing laps, Sargeant explained there was no life left in his hard tyres.
“Yeah, well, the tyre was finished at that point, so there’s nothing left. I’m just kind of trying to get to the end on the tyre I have left.”
It wasn’t just an issue on the hards, Sargeant struggled on all three compounds.
“I don’t know, I used all three compounds and they all felt pretty poor for me. So yeah, not a good race.”
Sargeant received the lightweight floor in Spain and had the same spec car as his teammate for the first time in a couple of months. The FW46 continues to be overweight.
However, the American driver says the floor has not been giving the downforce it should be, leaving him on the back foot once again.
“The floor has been underperforming significantly by a few tenths and I don’t know how much that adds to degradation. But yeah, that was bad.”
Williams will not be bringing anything in the short term concerning updates. Instead, the focus should be on fixing the floors and make sure they generate the downforce that the numbers suggest.
“Nothing other than that we need to get these floors fixed.
“I don’t know [when they’ll be fixed]. I’m sure it won’t be anytime super soon.”
