Sergio Pérez managed to turn a disappointing ninth place in qualifying into a decent fourth place after the disqualification of Lewis Hamilton. He wasn’t too elated though, as his RB19 did not work too well on the hard tyre, denying him of any more progress in the race.
“I think we’ve shown at times really good pace. I think just my my pace on the hard tyre was not good enough to make more progress, so something that we got to look at,” the Mexican explained. “We know we compromised quite a bit our balance for the weekend, given that it was only one practice and this is what happens on the Sprint event.
“You know you either go wrong direction or right direction, but I do expect to be a lot better.
“Especially considering how much we compromise the car, we believe that we we left a lot of performance in it. So hopefully we are able to prove that come Mexico next weekend.”
Once again the weekend was a bit of a struggle for Checo, but he feels that both in the setup department as in the approach to the weekend as a whole some more improvements can be made.
“It’s a bit of both. You know, I think we were so lost that I think we were having some difficulties with our preparation on the simulator, to what we were experiencing on track, and just on track taking the wrong directions and then end up compromising massively our weekend. So I think we need to step back a bit and start all over again.”
Being under pressure and scrutiny because of his recent poor performances, Pérez was glad to finally have a clean weekend again.
“Yeah, it’s good just to do a full race distance and understand that there is quite a lot more potential coming up.”
Up next for the six time Grand Prix winner is his home race in Mexico-City, a place where he hopes to finally put on a good performance again, expecially when Hamilton is aiming to grab second place in the championship from the Red Bull driver.
“I think we didn’t get to show our full pace this weekend, so I I really believe that we should be a lot stronger than what we were today.
“I’m just giving my best, you know, and we’ll see where we end up,” he adds. “I need to make sure that we are able to improve it, step back a gear and yeah, they keep improving their car and and we can see that they’re getting a stronger every race, so it would be a good fight, which will be great the next four races.”
