Louis Sharp received a post-race penalty following the FIA Formula 3 Sprint Race at the Australian Grand Prix after a collision that eliminated both PREMA Racing drivers from the contest.
The New Zealander made contact with teammate James Wharton at Turn 5 while the pair battled for position during the race at Albert Park. The incident forced both drivers to retire, ending PREMA’s chances of scoring in the Sprint Race.
After reviewing video footage and hearing from both drivers and team representatives, the stewards concluded that Sharp was fully responsible for the clash and issued a time penalty that later affected the final classification.
Turn 5 clash ends race for both PREMA drivers
The incident unfolded roughly eleven minutes into the F3 Australian GP Sprint Race as Sharp and Wharton battled closely through the opening sector. Wharton initially held the advantage while the pair ran side by side through several corners. Sharp attempted to attack around the outside at Turn 4 but had not moved far enough ahead at the apex to claim the corner. Wharton exited normally, which pushed Sharp beyond the track limits on the outside.
Rather than conceding the position and rejoining behind, Sharp kept the throttle fully applied through the run-off area. This allowed him to return alongside and attempt another move into Turn 5 on the inside. As Wharton turned into the corner, contact followed with Sharp only partially alongside. The collision forced both PREMA cars out of the race.
Stewards assign blame to Sharp after accident in the Australian GP F3 Sprint Race
Following the race, the stewards summoned both drivers and team representatives to review the situation. Officials studied the available video footage alongside telemetry data before reaching a verdict.
Their analysis showed that Sharp had remained at full speed through the run-off area after leaving the track. This placed him in position to launch another attack, despite not having yielded the position earlier in the sequence. The stewards also concluded that Sharp had not established enough overlap to claim racing room on the inside of Turn 5. As a result, they deemed the New Zealander wholly responsible for the incident.
Sharp received a 10-second time penalty for the collision. With the sanction applied, he dropped to 16th place in the final Sprint Race classification. Two penalty points were also added to his record for the 2026 season.
