Every alliance has its expiration date, but the recent bombshell news that Lewis Hamilton is leaving Mercedes has shaken the paddock, concluding the 11-year love affair between the driver and the Silver Arrows.

Team principal Toto Wolff confirmed Hamilton’s departure, expressing his pride and acceptance of the decision, a decision that not only marks the end of an era for Mercedes but sparks a new chapter for Hamilton, in the iconic red of Ferrari.

Shedding light on his relationship with his friend of many years, Fred Vasseur, the team principal at Ferrari, Wolff says that nothing is changing between them.

“I have great respect for Fred. Not only as a racing manager but also, as a long-time friend.

“There is no bad feeling towards Fred trying to get the best employees, the best drivers.

“It is a cutthroat environment, and as much as I try to do the best for our group, he will do that for Ferrari.”

Despite the competitive nature of their roles, Wolff emphasised the absence of animosity in Vasseur’s move to lure Hamilton away. It’s a ruthless sport, and Wolff doesn’t shy away from this, illustrating their relationship via a metaphorical rugby match.

“We punch each other in the nose, but we are able to get off the pitch and have a respectful relationship.”

The unexpected timing of Hamilton’s move, however, did leave Wolff shocked. Despite this, he noted that Hamilton appeared to be giving the team ample time to plan for the future.

Bidding adieu to Mercedes-powered cars at the end of 2024 with a remarkable number of records — 103 wins, 7 Drivers’ Championships, and 104 pole positions, in his own words, Hamilton said, “I have had an amazing 11 years with this team, and I’m so proud of what we have achieved together”. You can be sure he will be looking to add to those numbers this season.

Discussing Hamilton’s relationship with the Mercedes brand, Wolff claimed that, “in terms of a team-driver pairing, our relationship with Lewis has become the most successful the sport has seen”, and their partnership has been nothing short of iconic.

As Scuderia Ferrari welcomes Hamilton into the paddock next year, the dynamics within the team are set for a major shift, with Carlos Sainz leaving departing in order for Hamilton to drive alongside Charles Leclerc.
