Lewis Hamilton waited over 31 months to stand on the top step of the podium. His victory at Silverstone was one for the record books as the 39-year-old became the first driver in F1 history to score nine wins at one venue.
Following George Russell’s victory in Austria, Mercedes was back at the top step of the podium at Silverstone with Lewis Hamilton. Taking their second consecutive win, Mercedes looks like they are back in the game.
Speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton says maintaining a hardworking approach is important but is hopeful they can challenge Red Bull and McLaren.
“We definitely don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, that’s key in our approach, but, also, defiintely, like: ‘It’s game on!,” Hamilton stated.
“We’re fighting, we’re chasing, and we’re going to try and win as many races as George mentioned or compete for as many wins as possible.”
With George Russell claiming pole postion in Canada and Britain after a victory in Austria, and Hamilton ending his long win-less drought in front of his home crowd, Mercedes has become more formidable thanks to a series of updates following F1’s return to Europe.
“You know, it may turn out this weekend that Red Bull or the McLaren is still lightyears ahead this weekend, who knows?
“But I think what we’ve shown over the past few races is that with determination, with real focus, and just persistent chasing for perfection and improvement, you can make a difference.”
The 104-time race winner is optimistic that they can move up the standings in both championships during the second half of the season.
Hamilton and Russell could overtake Sergio Pérez this weekend if he has another bad race.
“We are united as a team, and we’re going to make sure that we finish the season on a high, and if we can lift the team up the ladder in the Constructors’, if we can progress, then we are not too far off the drivers up ahead of us and that would be great.”
