Will Power has extended his contract with Team Penske on a multi-year deal. The Australian confirmed it in a video posted by IndyCar previewing the Texas XPEL 375 that takes place on Sunday. His current one was due to run out at the end of this campaign.
Power is a two-time champion in the IndyCar series and won the Indy 500 back in 2018. The 42-year-old is currently in his fifteenth season with Team Penske.
Last year he claimed his second championship after a thrilling title fight against the likes of Newgarden and Dixon. The driver from Toowoomba also overtook Mario Andretti for the most poles (68) in the history of the series in 2022.
“I’m so fortunate to have had Verizon on the car for more than a decade and for those guys to re-up and then to re-up with Penske as well,” said Power.
“I always look back and just say, I say it often, I’m very fortunate because it’s where you want to be as a driver. You’re in a team where you’re given a car that can win week in, week out. So I’m very, very fortunate in that respect.”
Power started in Champ Car career back in 2005 and has been driving in IndyCar since 2008.
The Aussie admits he couldn’t have imagined spending so many years in the premier open wheel category in North America.
“No, I did not, Power stated. “It just blows my mind if I look back on it.
“Certainly in those early days, you’re wondering every year at Christmas, what are you doing the next year?
“But yeah, it’s a real privilege to have that, you know, know you’re going to get signed and you’re getting signed for multiple years and be in a consistent situation with the same crew, same engineer for multiple years.
“I mean, they’re all the things that create you a situation to win championships. So yeah, I’m lucky for that.”
