With only 2 points in the bag for Williams Racing so far this year, they sit P9 in the Constructors’ Championship ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.

The 2024 season has not been the smoothest for the team as they have been beset with problems, such as a lack of spare parts and an overweight car.

Williams finally seems to be getting on track to fight for points consistently. Albon scored their first points of the season in Monaco with a P9, and he was running in P11 in Canada when he was taken out by a spinning Carlos Sainz.

The Thai explained that there are performance upgrades coming soon, but the team’s main gains can come from slimming down the FW46.

Albon also talks about how everything is a financial decision, including trying to reduce the weight of the car. All factors have to be considered before making a decision.

“There’s still a lot of performance in weight. We’re still far away from where we want to be. We do have upgrades coming that are performance as well.

“I would say the carrot at the moment is more towards the weight than the aero side and in some ways we are comparing the two and seeing financially as well is a big thing around what makes sense because losing weight isn’t cheap as well.”

Albon explains the new path Williams is taking in terms of development for the car where instead of bringing a couple of massive upgrades, they have small updates to come through this campaign.

The upgrades and development path this year will be crucial for the team as the current set of regulations remain until the end of 2025.

The biggest goal for Williams at the moment is to fix the weight issues. Once the goal has been hit, it’s a big step forward for the team.

“I think at the minute we are on a slightly different development path.

“This year it’s a little bit more smaller things each race. Last year was one big step which was this weekend last year. In terms of development it’s still important because the regulations aren’t changing next year.

“Whatever you gain from this year you move on to next year. The biggest thing for us as a team is to make sure we hit weight targets. That would be our biggest step forward.”
