During the first free practice session of the 2024 Monaco E-Prix, the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team faced an unexpected setback when veteran driver Sam Bird suffered a significant hand injury.

The incident occurred at the Sainte Devote turn (Turn 1), where Bird experienced a lock-up leading to a collision with the wall in the run-off area.

Following the crash, Bird was promptly examined by medical personnel trackside and later transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation. NEOM McLaren later confirmed the severity of the situation in a press statement, revealing that Bird had indeed suffered a broken hand, necessitating his withdrawal from the remainder of the Monaco E-Prix.

In light of Bird’s injury, NEOM McLaren has proposed Taylor Barnard as his replacement for the rest of the event, pending official approval from the FIA.

Barnard, a young and promising talent from Norwich, England, has rapidly ascended the ranks in motorsport. Starting his single-seater career in 2020, he quickly made a name for himself, achieving runner-up positions in both the 2022 ADAC Formula 4 and the 2023 Formula Regional Middle East Championships. His performance in the FIA Formula 3 Championship further highlighted his capabilities, securing his first win at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit and finishing the season in the top ten of the drivers’ standings.

Most recently, Barnard has taken a step up to compete in the FIA Formula 2 for the 2024 season and has been an integral part of NEOM McLaren as a Reserve and Development Driver. His familiarity with the team and experience in Formula E, demonstrated during the Valencia Pre-Season Test in October 2023, make him a well-prepared candidate to take over Bird’s duties in the #8 car.

The team is working diligently to prepare the damaged vehicle for the upcoming FP2 session, ensuring that Barnard can smoothly transition to his potentially first competitive outing in Formula E.

Further updates regarding the situation and Barnard’s debut will be provided by NEOM McLaren as developments occur.
